embodying uncertainty

a practice for embracing uncertainty, which is to say, embracing life.

The Vernal Equinox marks the astrological New Year as the sun moves into Aries. Here we are, at the beginning of the new cycle. It’s a good day to reflect on time and the closing of cycles so that others might begin.

Endings and beginnings can bring up feelings of uncertainty, and we are - quite obviously - living in times when the feelings of uncertainty are heightened. Astrologer Colin Bedell encourages us to embrace uncertainty especially in a world that is so frequently “done for us”: Spotify tells us what to listen to, Instagram tells us what to buy, there are apps to anticipate our every need. To paraphrase Colin’s words, a certain world is a dead world, because life is uncertain. So how do we practice being in uncertainty?

I find the best way to expand my ability to be in uncertainty is to practice being in relationship with the one thing that is truly certain in a constantly changing world: gravity.

Gravity has been pulling and shaping me from before I was born, and I will be in constant relationship with its pull for the entirety of my life. There’s comfort there, if I’m willing to take it. It means I have to go a little slower than mainstream culture would like. It means I have to be a little softer, a bit more receptive. It takes effort, but it doesn’t take “work”. The effort is in undoing.

Last night in our Anchor Community session we explored this, and it was such a beautiful practice I have decided to share it. You can watch the replay on my Substack. It’s about 40 minutes, with about 25 minutes of practice. You don’t need anything special to be able to do this, and it can be done seated or lying down

To maintain the privacy of our group, I edited out the end of our session where participants shared their experience of the practice. And that might be my favorite part! I always learn so much from what people discover in their own practices, and the reflections from yesterday’s session were truly incredible. If you are interested in joining us, I am accepting applications. You can learn more and apply here.
