Every Wednesday for the past 7 years I have led a somatic meditation in a group I call Anchor Community. Some people have been there since the beginning, others come and go, but the group has carried us through more horrors than I can type here.

After last week’s session, one member shared that she had been experiencing insomnia for some weeks now, and this practice felt like it might help. She just wrote me to share that this practice, which she has named “The Safe Sphere” has helped her find deep rest again. That feels too good not to share, and so I’ll share the practice here.

It is a practice of returning back to the body in the present, and finding a sense of safety there. Easier said than done, and like anything, it’s complicated. How do we feel safe in a world that is so clearly dangerous? For some of us, the dangers might still feel far away, but for many of us, the dangers have been closing in for quite some time. Finding safety in the body might feel impossible. Taking the time to practice might feel frivolous, when there is so much that needs to be done, and then the nervous system is urging us to stay vigilant. But these practices of finding home in the body when and how we can are essential. So whether you practice this one, or something else, I hope you will practice.

You can listen to the practice here

It’s about 20 minutes long and can be practiced seated or lying down
